My friend has some Special Edition Batman game that came with a Batarang. He won't display the Batarang because it is all scratched up. To me, it looks like intentional but he doesn't think so. Can't say a hundred percent because I can't see your friend's batarang, but there are intentional scratches on it(see pic in link).
